Four nabbed for money laundering

THE Drug Enforcement Commission has arrested four people for various money laundering offences. DEC acting public relations officer Samuel Silomba said Joseph Mumbi, 36, of House No. 6 Mapepe Road Olympia, Lusaka, had been arrested for forgery and money laundering. He said it was that alleged that Mumbi while acting together with others unknown forged National Registration Card number. 390584/11/1 for Kalongo Chitenge. Mr Silomba said the forged card was later used to fraudulently open an account at a named bank where US$92, 978 was deposited. “The money was paid Mumbi after he sold a piece of land in Makeni by pretending that he was Mr Chitenge when in fact not. Mumbi, later transferred US$70,000 into a kwacha account where K316 million was withdrawn and US$15,000 was also withdrawn from the dollar account, respectively,” he said. In another development Mr Silomba said the commission had arrested two persons for issuance of cheques on an insufficiently funded account. He named the suspects as Kunda Newton Silwenga, 37, of Plot no. 24392A of Lusaka’s Libala South Township. He said Silwenga was arrested and jointly charged with Mususa Jacob Muwamba, 35, of 1Cooperation College in Lusaka, for issuing a post-dated cheque amounting to over K15 million which was deposited into an insufficiently funded account and later bounced. In a related development, the Commission had arrested Clifford Mulenga Chota, 48, of Plot No. 1561 Fisenge, in Luanshya for obtaining money by false pretences and money laundering. He said Chota, as director of Nationwide Commercial Vehicles, did obtain a sum of K305 million from Farmers Barn Limited purporting that he was going to supply them with an Iveco Truck when in fact not.
