THE National Water and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has awarded Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company with the prize of the second best performing water utility company in the country.
And Government has given Mulonga Water K8.4 billion as emergency funds to improve water reticulation in some townships.
Speaking during a media briefing yesterday in Chingola, Mulonga Water Managing Director Manuel Mutale said the award was a huge achievement for his company because it was the only water utility company of the 11 in Zambia that was not donor funded and yet managed to beat the other companies.
Mr Mutale said the company also received other awards for being the best in providing sanitation services to its clients with 81 per cent of them receiving sanitation services.
The third award was for the best water utility in items of generating revenues and financing its major projects.
Mr Mutale said despite Mulonga Water not receiving donor funds, it was capable of generating revenues and sustaining its operations aimed at improving the metering ratio and reducing water that was unaccounted for.
He said the certificate was an indication that Mulonga Water had prudent management and diligent employees who were dedicated to render the best services to its customers.
“This gives us the sense of pride even though our infrastructure needs immediate overhaul. We delivered with our old inherited infrastructure from the various councils in Chingola, Mufulira and Chililabombwe,” he said.
Mr Mutale said Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing was mobilizing funds to enable his company embark on a water project which required about K500 billion or find a strategic partner to work with the company.
He said Government gave Mulonga Water K8.4 billion to finance the improvement water reticulation in Chabanyama, Lulamba, and Chiwempala Townships in Chingola.
In Mufulira he said the funds would help in improving water reticulation in Kankoyo, Francis Mukuka and Kamuchanga Townships.
Mr Mutale said with the said interventions, the company was hoping to cover more than 90 per cent of Chingola’s population with clean piped water.
He said the water projects would also improve the revenue base of the company.
