SIX gunmen have shot and wounded a Chinese couple in Ndola before getting away with US$ 200,000 (more than K1 billion) cash and a vehicle valued at US$ 15, 000 (K 75 million).

Four of the gunmen were armed with a pistol each while two others were armed with guns whose make is unknown.

After shooting they also got away with six laptops and 10 mobile phones.

Police sources in Ndola have said the incident happened at around 22:30 hours on Sunday when the six broke into Hongji Mining Limited, a Chinese copper ore processing company located in Ndola’s Industrial area.

They jumped over a fence and attacked a security guard Kennedy Mafuta, 47, from whom they grabbed a short gun.

The criminals later went into the premises where 13 Chinese nationals reside and fired a gunshot injuring two of them, a husband Ma Peceai, 28, and his wife Lui Chen, 27.

Mr Ma sustained a bullet wound on the right palm while his wife was hit on the left leg.

Despite several attempts to deny them entry, the robbers forced their way into the room from where they stole the cash in a safe and got away with a silver Toyota Brevis motor vehicle registration number ADC 1426.
They also stole six laptops and 10 mobile phones belonging to the Chinese nationals.

The sources said after getting the money, the criminals used the Toyota Brevis to flee, but abandoned it in Ndeke township.

Mr Ma and his wife have been admitted to a Chinese hospital in Ndola while the guards, Kachana and his colleague were in custody to assist police with investigations.

Police recovered three empty cartridges at the scene.

Hongji has a Zambian workforce of 20 employees and on the night of the incident 10 local workers were on duty at the smelter.
Meanwhile, three computer science offices and the natural sciences sections at the Copperbelt University in Kitwe caught fire in the early hours of yesterday.
