600 Grinaker mine employees drag firm to court

THE Six hundred employees at Grinaker LTA Mining Contractors have dragged the Firm to court over alleged failure to pay gratuity and non remittal of monthly contributions to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

This is according to an affidavit in support of complaint under section 85 (4) of the Industrial relations Court sworn in on March 28, 2013.

The workers are also are also disputing the company rule which states that terms of a contract between management and employees can only be signed upon completion of the task at hand.

And Grinaker Mine union representative Albert Lukanga said in a statement yesterday that said the employees had no option but to take the Firm to court after a series of consultative forums with management proved futile.

“When we went on strike in October 2011, the then Mines Minister Wilbur Simuusa came to the company and directed that the human resource manager must revise our contracts to conform to the current Zambian labour laws.

“Even the Labour deputy Minister Rayford Mbulu has written to the managers, telling them to offer us better conditions of service,” he said.

Mr Lukanga said upon receipt of the warnings by the two Ministers, management at the Firm had promised better conditions of service which up to now had not come to fruition.

The matter comes up for hearing on the April 18, 2013.
