MUZ president dies

MINEWORKERS Union of Zambia (MUZ) president, Oswell Munyenyembe, yesterday died after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned on the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriageway. His driver, Dave Chibuta, sustained injuries and is admitted to Nkana West Mine Hospital. Copperbelt police Chief, Mary Tembo, confirmed the accident in an interview in Kitwe yesterday. The Toyota Prado registration number ACP 873 overturned at Maposa area on the way to Kitwe. “Mr Munyenyembe and his driver, Dave Chibuta, aged 35 were travelling from Ndola to Kitwe when the vehicle overturned due over-speeding. Mr Munyenyembe died upon arrival at the hospital while Mr Chibuta sustained injuries,” Ms Tembo said. The accident happened around 13:10 hours. Mr Munyenyembe, 59, ascended to the MUZ presidency on November 4, last year when he went through unopposed. The elections were conducted after his predecessor, Rayford Mbulu, left the union. Mr Munyenyembe served as MUZ general secretary prior to his election as president. Meanwhile, police in Ndola have detained two youths of Chief Chiwala in connection with the murder of Adesi Mutanda, 19, of the same area. The deceased is believed to have been, murdered on February 2 this year around 23:00 hours near Lipiya Basic School. Ms Tembo identified the suspects as Maxwell Chisenga, 19 and James Musaka, 17, who have been detained to help the police with investigations. The police have also picked a skull in Ndola’s Misundu area of a person believed to be the one recently reported to have gone missing. She said the skull was found in Kanyasi stream in Malia Chimona area. And a Luanshya resident had his Toyota Sprinter registration number ACL 3258 stolen at a night club. Ms Tembo said Paul Mukumbuta in the company of his cousin only identified as Wesley had his car stolen from the parking lot.
